Orthodontics for Children and Teens

Orthodontics for Children & Teens

Most orthodontic treatment begins between ages 8-12. Although your child’s teeth may appear to be straight, Dr. Violet is able to detect subtle problems with jaw growth and how permanent teeth are coming in, even when baby teeth are present. This is important because there are some orthodontic problems that are easier to correct at  an early age.

At what age should a child see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that every child should be seen by an orthodontist at the first signs of orthodontic problems or no later than age 7. Dr. Violet agrees because early intervention done correctly is more effective and easier on the child. If there is no orthodontic problem, she lets you know so that you can enjoy peace of mind.

When is the best time to begin treatment?

In cases that do not need early intervention, Dr. Violet prefers to start treatment around ages 9-10, when baby teeth are still present. She uses braces/appliances to hold spaces as the baby teeth are falling. This allows her to treat mild to moderate crowded cases without extractions or removal of enamel. With this treatment philosophy she is able to complete treatment in majority of cases within 2 yrs. as opposed to 3 yrs. Since treatment is finished quicker, one does not have to deal with braces during teenage years. This involves full braces to correct the malocclusion, place teeth in their final positions and achieve a beautiful smile.

Dr. Violet will determine what is ideal for your child. We want you to feel comfortable with the treatment recommended and encourage you to ask any questions you may have in order to get a clear understanding.

WHAT OUR PATIENTS ARE SAYING…

Dr. Violet Orthodontics

My son had a permanent expander/spacer in his mouth. We used a water pick which was very effective at cleaning above and around the appliance. With the removal of the expander you can clearly see the improvement of space now available for his adult teeth to come in and there were no sores or difficulties everything is pink and clean."
